Public procurement - the purchase of goods, services and public works by governments and public utilities - is now recognised as an important driver of innovation and economic growth, if effectively managed and targeted. Public purchasers command no less than 15% of the EU economy. This site, which is aimed at companies of all sizes - contains information on a package of measures to help simplify and clarify the rules relating to public procurement. A European statute for SMEs
Europe's large firms now have the option of creating a European Company, able to operate in all Member States and with shares traded on the open market, but for smaller firms there is as yet no such possibility. The Commission is developing a proposal for a European statute for small enterprises, which will make it easier for small firms to operate in the Single Market.
