<title><![CDATA[Environmental Law Update]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Come along to the BBEF&rsquo;s annual legal regulations briefing to:</p>

<p>ECUS are experts in environmental regulations. Their senior consultant, Yvonne Rowse, will run through key pieces of environmental legislation, placing a special focus on regulations that are commonly misunderstood or confusing.</p>
<p>She will give us simple legal &ldquo;dos and don&rsquo;ts&rdquo; and tips on practical, day-to-day management of environmental regulations</p>
<p>We will also place a special focus on 2 pieces of recent legislation:</p>

	<li>2011 Waste Regs &ndash; are you complying?&nbsp; A quick review of the regs plus a run-down on what you need to do to comply</li>
	<li>The Green Deal &ndash; as introduced by the Energy Act 2011.&nbsp; The Green Deal will &ldquo;revolutionise&rdquo; the energy efficiency of property by eliminating the need to pay upfront for energy efficiency measures:&nbsp; the cost should be covered by savings on the electricity bill.</li>

<p>Jenny Lawson from Enterprise Europe Network Yorkshire will also come along to give us a preview of what legislation in on the horizon and about to sweep in from the EU:&nbsp; from tighter controls on water pollution to new rules on when a waste is not a waste!</p>

<title><![CDATA[New developments in food science: realising the potential of ‘omics’ technologies 16 February 2012]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[<p>The thirteenth in a series of annual symposia in food science is jointly organised by The Food<br>
	and Environment Research Agency (Fera), UK, and the Joint Institute for Food Safety and<br>
	Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN), University of Maryland, USA. Each year the symposium focuses<br>
	on a different topic associated with state-of-the-art food science and technology. The topic of<br>
	the 2012 event is &ldquo;New developments in food science: realising the potential of &lsquo;omics&rsquo;<br>
	technologies&rdquo;.</p>
<p><br>
	Genomic, proteomic and metabolomic technologies are rapidly developing, enabling<br>
	capabilities (or resources) in biological sciences that will have far reaching impacts in the<br>
	food and agricultural science sectors. The Symposium aims to explore the potential<br>
	applications of these technologies in a variety of areas relating to food and sustainable crop<br>
	production. It be held in York, UK, in June 2012 and will bring together industrial, academic<br>
	and government scientists to explore the present and future impact of &lsquo;omics&rsquo; technologies in<br>
	food science.</p>

<p>ORGANISING INSTITUTIONS</p>
<p>Fera, The Food and Environment Research Agency, is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). It specialises in the sciences underpinning food safety and quality, agriculture for sustainable crop production, environmental management and conservation. Fera&rsquo;s overarching purpose is to support and develop a sustainable food chain, a healthy natural environment, and to protect the global community from biological and chemical risks. Located in a purpose-built complex at Sand Hutton, York, with state-of-the-art research facilities it provides scientific advice and technical support to public and private sector customers in the UK and worldwide.</p>
<p>JIFSAN, the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) is the foundation of public and private partnerships that provides the scientific basis for ensuring a safe, wholesome food supply as well as provide the infrastructure for contributions to national food safety programs and international food standards. The Institute fosters the missions of FDA and the University of Maryland through the creation of partnerships to increase the quantity and quality of research, which will provide the basis for sound public health policy. This includes multidisciplinary research, outreach and educational programs, and policy studies.</p>

<p>eco-fair 2011 was an unprecedented success with fantastic attendance on the day and over 3,000 web hits in three months. The event attracted a broad spectrum of interest from national companies like the Cooperative, Wilmot Dixon, Yorkshire Water &amp; Provident Financial to local universities, local authorities and&nbsp;companies from farms to manufacturers and printers to communications companies.</p>
<p>2012 promises to be even bigger and better.&nbsp; We have brought on board new event partners and we will be expanding our seminar programme.</p>

<description><![CDATA[<p>The EU-Japan Centre is currently inviting applications for a mission to Japan focused on the Food and Drink sector, financed by the European Commission.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&lsquo;Distribution and Business Practices in Japan&rsquo; is an intensive 5-day training mission studying Japanese consumer behaviour and marketing, and is especially designed for European managers responsible for developing or improving their company&rsquo;s marketing strategy in Asia / Japan.</p>
<p>The programme aims to help participants improve their knowledge and understanding of the Japanese business approach to customer satisfaction, and to understand how existing distribution chains (from manufacturers to retailers) successfully adjust&nbsp; their strategy to develop segmentation and product differentiation in the Japanese market.&nbsp; There will also be special insights into Japan&rsquo;s business applications of e-commerce, product traceability and relevant leading technologies in Japan in the distribution sector.</p>
